Barrie MPP to receive award

Barrie Advance
MPP Rod Jackson will receive an award for his looking to protect children ages 16 and 17.
Justice for Children and Youth (JFCY), a legal aid office that represents low-income youth, will bestow the Youth Legal Services Award on Jackson Friday night for his work to protect older teens who previously fell through the legislative and legal cracks.
His Right to Care bill enables 16 and 17-year-old to access age-appropriate care in the child welfare system. Previously shut out of the child welfare system, these teens would have to access homeless shelters and Ontario Works for aid, rather than supports that would enable them to stay in school.
"My team and I are honoured that we will be recognized for our work on the Right to Care bill," said Jackson. "This change is long overdue in improving the lives of youth in need."
